Blog Cast with Jess Lively!

I had such a great time chatting with Jess lively the other day for The Lively Show! I figured since life is already pretty busy adjusting to 3 kids- might as well throw a podcast interview in there right? I have to say that it was actually kind of hilarious with Chloe’s feeding and pooping noises in the background but Jess was so patient and sweet (and she assured me that she’s a ninja with editing 😉 I’ll be honest, it was a little frightening to open up about insecurities but it was truly an honor to be interviewed and hopefully share some insights and personal experiences from my life.

If you aren’t familiar with the lively show – Jess interviews someone on her blogcast from all different professions once a week.  Her website is focused on helping people live with intention through values. I spent a few hours last week reading through her site and listening to some old interviews – it really is inspiring. I really admire Jess for spending so much of her time focusing on helping others to find encouragement and be successful. So jump on over to hear my interview and many more. Thank you so much for having me Jess!

Dorm Makeover with Jillian Harris & Make-A-Wish

We were so excited when Jillian Harris contacted us to be a part of this very special dorm room makeover! She partnered with Make-A-Wish America to create this gorgeous space for Kaylee who has cystic fybrosis. Steal our Secrets: Sofa Styling!

We’re spilling our best styling secrets in an exciting new post series, and we’re starting with sofas! If your couch needs sprucing, try swapping out pillows. We think they’re the easiest and most affordable way to energize an entire room. But before you buy, make sure you scroll through our 4 best styling secrets for an effortlessly chic sofa.

Mix big and small pillow sizes! Are all of your pillows the same size? Try tossing in a lumbar size for good measure.

Use large and small scale patterns. Two large patterns next to each other can clash. Try alternating scale for a more varied look.

Incorporate texture. We think the best way to do this is to drape a cozy throw blanket over the arm of your sofa or add a few textured pillows.

Choose fresh, coordinating colors! Here’s a little secret that has big impact: Select one pillow with multiple colors in the pattern (like our Navy Fleur Chinoise Pillow on the far left) and then add 2-3 additional solid pattern pillows from the same color palate.

And there you have it! Consider these 4 simple rules when you pick new pillows and your sofa will thank you. Below is our favorite pillow combination for the end of summer. We can’t get enough of the new Tribeca Collection!

Sprinkle Sugar Cookies

Summer’s in full swing and this new cookie recipe from Lauren of Lauren’s Latest makes a great addition to an outdoor picnic, birthday party, or bbq! Sugar cookies plus sprinkles? It’s the perfect combo to make any day a little happier : ) See below for the recipe. Thanks Lauren!

“Is it just me or are sprinkles showing up everywhere on the interwebs?! Well, I’m happy to report that I’ve caught the bug and decided to make some super-fun, chewy, colorful sprinkles-filled cookies. My 5 year old daughter was thrilled.

This is my basic sugar cookie recipe that I just added a bunch of sprinkles to. It comes together in a cinch and tastes great with or without the sprinkles.

Try them out and see how you {and your kiddos!} like ‘em. It was a great afternoon activity for my daughter and I. : )

Have a great day, friends!”

Decorating with Picture Books

We’re always on board with finding new ways of displaying art that’s inexpensive yet beautiful. Laura of You Doll Design shares a few of her favorite illustrators that can also be used as gorgeous art in your children’s room. Either displayed on a shelf or selecting individual pages to be framed, these illustrations are meant to be seen.

Decorating a child’s room with picture books is an easy way to add color and visual interest to the space. Some of them are such beautiful works of art themselves that, in my house at least, they sit high above reaching fingers where only an adult can bring them down and read with supervision. I thought I’d share a few of my current illustrative heroes so you can incorporate some of their gorgeous books into your own library (and perhaps out of reach for the time being : ). Below is an example of how we used an image from the gorgeous book by Nina Cosford to style a kids room as well as a few more of my favorites.

1. Mouse Doll / 2. Nina Cosford’s Illustration / 3. Polka Dot Pouf / 4. Two Ring Lamp / 5. Navy Deco Pillow / 6. Jenny Lind Bed

Nina Cosford: Pop-Up Books – Being the anglophile that I am, I couldn’t be more obsessed with this London – based artist. Her series of pop-up books are particularly stunning. If I could own and decorate my daughter’s room with everything Nina created – or better yet, live in her version of the world – I would be a happy girl indeed!

Jon Klassen – In my opinion this Canadian born illustrator, designer and concept artist can do no wrong. Jon achieves his striking and minimalist artwork with inks, gouache and acrylics and assembles a lot of his work digitally afterwards. Do yourself a favor and check him out!

Lotta Nieminen: Walk this World – This Finnish art director, illustrator and graphic designer is full of style. In fact, both her Manhattan and Helsinki homes were featured on Design Sponge! Her illustrations remind me of paper cutouts that form an intricately layered mural, creating a whimsical portrayal of our world and its varying cultures.

Rosy Lamb: Paul Meets Bernadette I was with my kids at the library recently when the cover of Rosy Lamb’s picture book, Paul Meets Bernadette, caught my attention. This book is full of thickly painted oil illustrations and a charming story, teaching its readers that finding beauty in our everyday world can change a dull day to one that’s fresh and full of color.

Oliver Jeffers: The Day the Crayons Quit – A perfect gift for back-to-school or for budding artists, it tells the story of a boy named Duncan and his box of opinionated and emotional crayons.
